On the 30th June 2011 UK Roads held a national passive safety Crash Demonstration Day. As in previous years, this unique, exciting and informative event took place at the Highway and Vehicle Outdoor Crash (HAVOC) facility at MIRA near Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

This event is organised to demonstrate the potential life saving capabilities of passively safe, crash friendly products. Hundreds of people are killed or seriously injured every year as a result of the presence of unforgiving objects by the side of the road. Making best proactive use of 'crash friendly' policies, designs and products can help to significantly reduce this toll.

The RETENTION SYSTEM allows consecutive bollards, posts or other street furniture to be installed quickly and easily in the original RS socket, offering greater control and management of infrastructure assets and a safe, environmentally efficient and intelligent foundation solution. In the first demonstration a Ford Fiesta was crashed at 35kph sideways into a traditional unforgiving 12 metre steel lighting column. The column was mounted in an IPL group RETENTION SYSTEM socket. Neither the column nor the RSe193 socket was affected by the impact. The side of the vehicle suffered appreciable damage and there was significant intrusion into the driver area. According to Police officers present, the damage inflicted was likely to have resulted in serious head, arm and leg injuries for the driver.

In a comparative test a Ford Fiesta was crashed at 35kph sideways into a passively safe 15 metre NE3 lighting column provided by SAPA. The column was mounted in an IPL group RETENTION SYSTEM socket. Despite the low speed and orientation of the impact, the Sapa aluminium column performed perfectly, shearing away causing very little damage or intrusion to the side of the car (and significantly less than that caused by the traditional steel column in the first demonstration). It is very unlikely that any serious injury would have been sustained by the driver as a result. The remaining portion of the column was subsequently removed with ease from the RSe250 socket, which was then available to be re-used for a replacement column. Passive Safety UK noted it was an impressive display of safe infrastructure design and congratulated the manufacturers on its performance.

Both the RETENTION SYSTEM and the Sapa aluminium column are designed for impact situations and road user protection. Combined they offer passive safety and a quick easy replacement solution for columns and poles in high-risk locations.
